No Pain, No Gain

The United States of America is known for being the country of opportunities and possibilities. The United States has a long history of producing Olympic gold medalist in all kinds of sports. Mark Spitz and Michael Phelps are two of the most recognized athletes of our time, and they are both swimmers. They have revolutionized the sport of swimming and its popularity by achieving something that no one ever has done before, winning seven (Spitz, 1972) eight (Phelps, 2008) gold medals in one Olympic game. College swimming in the United States is categorized by many things, great fellowship, hard work and athletes from around the world. Even though swimming is one of the most successful sports ever in the Olympic Games, it does not get a lot of recognition outside the Games. To be successful in college in the everyday life, you need to put down some dedication to fulfill your goals; this can take you to different levels in college swimming.

The difference between a division one school and division two school is remarkable, it is like day and night. The biggest difference between the two would be the funding. With a better funding the school will have more opportunities and possibilities to give you as a student athlete. With the better funding the school can act more professional because they have the money to do it. They have the privilege to hire their own academic advisor for each of the teams, and that can help YOU to make the right choices on your path to YOUR degree. With a bigger spending limit, comes the bigger athletic facilities and the school can hire a more experienced coaching staff for each of the teams. With these three together, it will make it easier to recruit new athletes. Another thing that differs from a division one and division two school is that you do not have to pay for a lot of the stuff yourself, like training trip, team apparel etc.

Hello Jesper,

I hope I have translated the above labels correctly :-) Anyway, I just read your blog, the English entries of course. I must say, you have done a good job of balancing your personal story with cultural analysis.

It was good having you as a student in my class. Wish you the very best in all your ventures.
